A COVENTRY man has been arrested after a horrific crash which left another motorist with multiple serious injuries.

Images released by North Warwickshire Police reveal what they branded ‘a scene of utter devastation’ with the injured driver eventually having to be freed from his damaged vehicle after it collided with another.

Warwickshire Police confirmed the other motorist, a man, 33, was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs who is in police custody.

A North Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the scene of a two vehicle Road Traffic Collision just after 6.45pm on Thursday, February 28.

“Upon arrival officers were met with a scene of utter devastation, a 2002 Volkswagen Golf had collided with 2005 Suzuki Wagon R.

“The driver of the Wagon R was trapped in his vehicle until specialist crews from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service were able to free him.

“The driver of the black VW Golf was arrested at 7.00pm at the scene for driving a motor vehicle whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

“The VW Golf smelt heavily of beer and a number of cans and a bottle of spirits were found inside the vehicle.

“He was taken to Nuneaton Police Station where he provided a positive evidential sample of breath.

“The driver of the Wagon R remained calm and collected throughout the ordeal but has suffered significant injury as a result of the collision.

“Due to the nature of the incident the Warwickshire Police Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct a scene survey.

“The investigation continues.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was trapped in his car.

“Ambulance crews worked carefully with the fire service to free the man from the vehicle.

“He was treated for multiple serious injuries before being taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further assessment.”
