A COVENTRY man who traced his ancestors back over 1,500 years is urging the younger generation to delve into their family history.

Roy Pargetter, a self-taught genealogist historian embarked on a journey spanning over 15 years, tracing his lineage back to the year 520.

Inspired by his father’s interest in their family tree, Roy has meticulously researched and documented 161 family trees to date, uncovering compelling stories and hidden connections along the way.

Reflecting on his journey, he said: “My dad started it by always wanting him to do his family tree, and I carried on in his legacy”.

Roy has honed his skills to an impressive level and now seeks to share his passion with others.

“I decided to become a genealogist, and I have become that good at it, I want more people to know about the art of genealogy.”

Delving into centuries-old records and archives, Roy said he has unearthed captivating narratives that provide glimpses into the past.

Encouraging the younger generation to embrace genealogy, he emphasised the reward of uncovering familial connections and historical legacies.

“The younger generation should get involved with stuff like that because it is so rewarding,” he added.

“There is that much information out there that you don’t know about.”

Roy said his quest for knowledge has taken him far and wide, having visited over 200 churches and travelling the country in pursuit of ancestral clues.

He highlighted the importance of archival research, cautioning against relying solely on online resources.

“Everything online is not what it’s made out to be.

“You need to look at certificates and censor forms.

“You need to go to the archives and not be afraid to ask people and go to churches and baptism churches and just enjoy yourself because it is very rewarding.”

For those intrigued by the mysteries of their ancestry, Roy said that Coventry Archive stands as a primary resource and a good place to start.
