Coventry man who was drink driving on A46 given 60-month ban

A COVENTRY man has been banned from getting behind the wheel for 60 months after driving on the A46 at nearly two and a half times the legal alcohol limit.

Coventrians called the police after Rajinder Kumar was spotted driving his blue Dacia car on the A46 southbound near London Road on Saturday, June 3 during the 4pm rush hour.

The 60-year-old swerved from lanes one to three before hitting the central reservation and was arrested at the scene.

Police later discovered Kumar’s driving licence had expired in 2018 and he was further arrested and charged for the offence.

Kumar appeared before Warwickshire Magistrates on Friday, June 23 charged with drink driving and driving without a licence.

As well as his driving ban, Kumar was also ordered to 200 hours unpaid work and to pay £249 in costs.

SC Matt Mcleod said: “There is no doubt that Rajinder Kumar and everyone else driving on the A46 near Coventry that day had a lucky escape.

“Fortunately he collided with the central reservation, but it could have been much worse if he had collided with another vehicle.

“Road safety is not down to luck. People who drive a motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed limit of alcohol are a blight on society, raising insurance premiums and endangering the lives of innocent people.

“Positive action must be taken in order to send a message to those that think it is acceptable.”
