Coventry mans plea to help give terminally ill wife one last holiday

A COVENTRY man whose wife received the heartbreaking news she has terminal cancer just months after believing she was on the road to recovery now trying to raise enough cash to fund one final family holiday.

Just under three months ago, Jamie Payne was celebrating with his wife Joanne after she had finished her treatment for breast cancer, which she had been battling since last March.

However, after a week of severe lethargy, Joanne displayed signs of a stroke and was taken straight to the hospital where she had a CT scan.

The couple then received the devastating news the cancer had returned and Joanne had three tumours on her brain.

She has also been told the cancer is incurable and the prognosis is a year, with it expected she will only be able to live normally for a short time before it takes effect and stops her mobility and coordination.

To ensure he and his family can make some final precious memories with Joanne, Jamie has set up a JustGiving page to raise £3,000 to take her on a last holiday with their three daughters, their partners and two grandchildren.

Jamie told the Observer: “It’s pulled the rug from underneath us, we thought this was time for celebration and then this happened.

“Joanne has been rather stoic about the whole situation but that’s hardly a surprise as that’s her entire attitude to life.

“She’s a remarkable woman and always very positive.

“We don’t mind where we go on holiday, as long as we’re together and give Joanne the holiday she deserves that’s all that matters.”

So far, over £1,900 has been raised, and the couple are currently in Cornwall having been given the use of a caravan by a friend of their eldest daughter.

And Jamie, originally from Nuneaton, is organising a charity rave to raise cash for the holiday, with some famous DJs already committing to appearing.

He added: “We are staggered by the amount that people have given so far.

“Next week Joanne will start on a whole head radiotherapy so it’ll do us good to have a break before then, the last ten days have been horrific so the trip to Cornwall will be a good opportunity to spend some quality time together.”
