Coventry Motofest set to stage competitive racing on Ring Road

COMPETITIVE motorsports are set to take place on Coventry’s ring road.

Coventry Motofest has announced plans to host competitions including sprints, time trials and specialist rally stages at future events.

It follows a recently announced Motor Sport Association (MSA) ruling that allows closed road motorsports to take place in mainland Britain.

Staging competitive motorsports on the Coventry ring road is a long held ambition of the organisers involved in the annual event.

In another new initiative, Coventry Motofest has partnered with the Coventry Business Improvement District (BID) – the body that represents the city’s retailers – to deliver a ‘show within a show’.

It plans to create the largest representation of classic cars and bikes, over 1000, ever seen at the two-day festival.

The classic vehicle offering will be expanded across the show , including the high-profile classic vehicles running on the ‘Bennetts Sprint Circuit’ and the Coventry BID Classic Cavalcade, which will see all the classic cars and bikes taking part in Coventry Motofest provide a rousing finale to the event with end-of-the-day parade laps on the ring road circuit.

James Noble, Coventry Motofest Festival Director, said: “We have made no secret of our desire to host competitive motorsport on the Coventry Ring Road and this change in the legislation should enable us to do exactly that.

“We will now look carefully at the legislation and will aim to be competitive as soon as the legislation allows.

“If this is not in time for this year’s event, which is now less than two months away, we still have our unique blend of high-octane motor sport demonstrations on both two and four wheels, classic car and bike displays and soon-to-be-revealed content that makes Coventry Motofest 2017, the largest free urban motorsport festival in the UK.”

Since 2010 the MSA has called for a change in the law to allow local authorities to suspend the Road Traffic Act for authorised motorsport events, without requiring individual Acts of Parliament.

Coventry’s Motofest 2017 is a two-day festival dedicated to the city’s motoring heritage, which this year takes place on Saturday June 3 and Sunday June 4.

There will be a range of automotive activities taking place from pop-up and demonstration events to static displays and fringe events at Motofest, now the largest free urban motorsport festival in the UK.
