Coventry MP calls on Rishi Sunak for 'smart' furlough scheme to secure 7,424 jobs in Coventry North West alone

NEW research by the Labour Party estimates 7,424 jobs could be at risk in Coventry North West alone unless the Chancellor delivers a ‘smart’ furlough scheme as part of emergency action to tackle Britain’s jobs crisis.

Seven months after Rishi Sunak launched his jobs plan last July, 4,760 people are claiming out of work benefits and 7,424 people are still on furlough in the constituency.

After several last-minute changes over the autumn and winter, the scheme is now set to expire at the end of April, with rumours suggesting it may be extended.

But with 5million people still on furlough nationally, Labour is calling for the Chancellor not to repeat the mistakes of last year by winding down the scheme while public health restrictions are in place and demand is still severely impacted.

Taiwo Owatemi, MP for Coventry North West, called on the Chancellor for urgent action to secure, recover and create jobs to help those affected.

“This must include a smarter furlough scheme, an overhaul of the failing Kickstart youth programme, and reform of the shambolic Green Homes Grant as part of wider action to ‘Build it in Britain’ and support the creation of 400,000 new jobs.

“People can’t afford to wait for the Chancellor to get his act together.

“They need emergency action today, not more dither and delay until the budget.”

In a speech during a Parliamentary debate on ‘Supporting Businesses and Individuals Through the Coronavirus Crisis’, Ms Owatemi outlined the experiences of local residents she had supported who had been excluded from the Government’s financial support.

“This crisis hits at the heart of our economy where people who play by the rules, work hard, and try their best to get ahead cannot despite their sacrifices. Labour would rebuild our economy and provide stronger support for businesses and families through the crisis.

“In the remaining months of restrictions, now is an opportunity for government to do what’s in the best interest of families in my constituency.”
