THE ANNOUNCEMENT of the closure of two Boots sites in Coventry has prompted one of the city’s MP’s to campaign for them to remain open.
Coventry North West Labour MP Taiwo Owatemi demands Boots stops the planned closure of their pharmacy at 116-120 Jardine Crescent over fears the closures will impact patient access and exacerbate health inequality in the region.
The closures – announced by Boots earlier this month – will see 300 of its stores shut their doors for good, reducing their number of outlets from 2,200 to 1,900.
Taiwo Owatemi said: “This news is deeply worrying for many elderly people in the local area who use this store and all those who rely on the support and advice provided by staff in our local Boots pharmacy.
“As the only pharmacy in Jardine Crescent, the closure will not only impact patient access to medicine but will exacerbate health inequality in the area.
“Customers relying on the local Boots pharmacy will now have to travel to the Boots store at Cannon Park which is two miles away.
“This will disproportionately impact those with travelling difficulties including disabled and elderly customers.
“During a cost-of-living crisis, people should not have to pay for travel to their local pharmacy.
“Our local pharmacy is the heart of the community. Please sign this petition and join the campaign to save Coventry’s Boots stores.”
Boots had closed another of their Coventry stores, the Cross Cheaping branch in October 2019.
