Coventry MP launches cost-of-living campaign

Coventry Editorial 11th Aug, 2022   0

LABOUR MP for Coventry South, Zarah Sultana, joined trade unions, community groups and fellow MPs to launch a national campaign to fight the cost-of-living crisis.

The campaign was launched with a video fronted by Ms Sultana, Communication Workers Union (CWU) general secretary Dave Ward, National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) general secretary Mick Lynch, and rank-and-file workers from across different industries.

In the coming weeks, the campaign will hold large-scale rallies across the country, and groups will be organising to assist striking workers by encouraging the public to support picket lines and back workers’ strike funds.

It will also be collecting food for those in need, building community groups to help people affected the most by skyrocketing bills and poverty wages, and encouraging tenants to organise.

Ms Sultana said: “There’s record profits for big business, a record number of billionaires, record wealth for the top 10%, but life is getting harder for everybody else. Coventry Foodbank is seeing demand rocket, but donations dry up as people struggle to make ends meet.

“It’s a cost-of-living crisis for ordinary people, but not for the super-rich. This campaign is about putting that right, sharing out the huge wealth that exists in our society and fighting to ensure everyone has a decent standard of living.”
