COVENTRY’S Multi-Faith Forum has called for calm following the racially-fueled riots breaking out in towns and cities across the UK.
The outbreaks have been caused by misinformation spread widely across the Internet following the Southport stabbings a week ago
Pru Porretta MBE, peace activitst and chair of the Godiva Trust, on behalf of the forum, said: “We, all faiths and non-in the city of Coventry are united in calling for peace and understanding.
“Our hearts go out to the parents of the girls, their families and the community in Southport.
“Their actions are an example to all of us of standing together as we have more in common and less in difference. We stand in solidarity with you.
“Modern technology has enabled us to communicate quickly and efficiently.
“This means we have a responsibility to use this avenue responsibly.
“I wonder what responsibility the platforms are showing allowing misinformation/unchecked information to be spread widely such that it has resulted in the alarming events around our country.
“To borrow the words of the Bristol contingent: ‘We are many, you are few. We are Bristol, who are you?’.”
She added members of Coventry Multi-Faith Forum stood together and prayed for peace for all people, to encourage goodwill and mutual respect for each other.
“We appreciate differences and live together harmoniously.
“Coventry is a city of sanctuary, a city of peace and reconciliation, our message is one voice spoken in many different languages: ‘unity peace and reconciliation, remembering that hate and violence escalation have no place. It solves nothing’.
“Living together in peace and harmony, by sharing, fosters respect and understanding, bringing peace and forgiveness.
“We acknowledge the dignity and respect between faiths and cultures, living together in hope for the future for all humanity.
“Our children, our families are precious and deserve a world that lives in peace, promoting pride for all citizens.”
