The mother of a man who is to stand trial over the fatal stabbing of Coventry man Daniel Kennell has appeared in court accused of helping him get away from the scene.

Ryan Preston has pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court to the murder of 27-year-old Daniel during an incident in St Austell Road, Wyken, on Sunday July 8.

Following the stabbing, Daniel was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, despite the efforts of paramedics.

Preston (27) of Hermitage Road, Stoke, Coventry, is due to stand trial at the court in January next year.

But he was back in the dock to hear the judge order that his case should be joined with that of his mother, who will now stand trial at the same time.

Appearing at the court for the first time, Tracey Preston (53) also of Hermitage Road, Coventry, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assisting an offender.

The charge alleges that she drove her son away from the scene of the stabbing, knowing or believing him to be guilty of an offence of murder.

The court heard that Mrs Preston accepts being present, but denies having any knowledge of there having been a murder or any other offence at the scene.

Adjourning the case for mother and son to stand trial together, Judge Andrew Lockhart QC remanded Ryan Preston in custody, but Tracey Preston was granted bail.
