£8,000 fund-raiser helps Coventry art space stay open for New Year

A STRUGGLING city artspace which feared it might not make it to 2024 has thanked Coventry’s cultural community after they rallied to ensure the popular venue saw in the New Year.

Commonground Coventry launched a desperate plea last month amid fears it would have to shut its doors before the end of the year if it was unable to cover its costs.

Bosses set up a crowdfunder page in a last-minute bid to raise cash, with several talented local artists donating artworks to use as incentives for people to donate.

Donations included an A3 cover art of Turner prize nominated artist George Shaw’s latest book ‘The Local’.

In total, almost £8,000 has been raised from 233 donations.

Founders Kate Rossin and John Randle opened Commonground at FarGo Village in 2021 and have been using their personal savings and loans and selling food and drink to pay for the overheads, without taking a wage.

After managing to see the back of 2023, the pair now have new funding options and a fresh programme of events which they hope will ensure Commonground’s long-term survival.
