A CROWD-FUNDER has been set up to help Coventry’s LGBTQ+ rugby team Coventry Corsairs make the trip to the ‘ultimate celebration’ of inclusion in the sport.
The team, formed in 2019, is looking to raise enough cash to get to Rome and take part in the Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament in May.
The club is raising funds to cover travel costs, accommodation and kit for the tournament and will be looking to raise £5,000 through a JustGiving page.
Its membership has doubled over the last season and the club hopes to take all of them to Rome as it steps onto the global stage for the first time.
Corsairs train every Tuesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8.30pm at the Black Pad and welcome all members regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, age or physical fitness levels.
The Bingham Cup is the worlds largest celebration of LGBTQ+ inclusive rugby, uniting teams and the wider Gay sports community from across the world for a week long festival of unity.
It was first held in 2002 and remembers gay rugby hero Mark Bingham, who on 9/11 was among the passengers to fight back against hijackers on board United flight 93.
While Mark and everyone else on board lost their lives after the plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, it is recognised because of the actions of the brave people on board, the plane didn’t hit its intended target.
