COVENTRY’S Grub and Gab Club is preparing to welcome those who need a warm and safe space in a bid to spread some Christmas cheer.
The Coventry Open Christmas project has been running for over 30 years and sees kind-hearted volunteers give up part of their holiday to help make someone else’s special, with those who are homeless receiving hot dinners and a warm place to sleep.
The project will see a 24-hour warm hub created at Queens Road Baptist Church from 9.30am on Saturday until 10am on December 29 for those who are homeless or isolated.
As well as an emergency overnight place to sleep, the scheme provides free hot meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as food parcels.
People’s Christmas spirit will be lifted by entertainment at the venue each night as well as bingo during the day and much more.
Dozens of Coventrians have volunteered their time while the National Grid has donated £4,200 towards the project.
Operations manager Natasha Leese said there was no need for anyone to be alone this festive season.
She added: “Free home-cooked meals and emergency food parcels will be distributed, making a real difference.
“There is a real struggle for people trying to support themselves this Christmas due to the rising cost of basic living.
“The grant from the Community Matters Fund ensures that everyone in need will have access to a safe, warm place over the Christmas period.”
