PEOPLE from Bedworth and Nuneaton are among those recognised by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire for outstanding contributions to their community.

Warwickshire’s High Sheriff for the term 2023/24, Sophie Hilleary, orchestrated a memorable event at the historic Old Shire Hall in Warwick on Tuesday, March 26.

The ceremony saw 47 people bestowed with certificates from the High Sheriff.

Winners from Nuneaton and Bedworth included Darren Forrest and Byron Banton of the Bradby Club in Rugby, honoured for their enduring commitment to coaching boxing and kickboxing for over three decades.

Sally Ann Veasey was recognised for her invaluable work with SWANS in Nuneaton, a supportive singing group catering to carers and people affected by dementia.

Mark Taylor’s dedication to mental health support through ‘Men Walking and Talking’ in Kenilworth was also celebrated.

The Rugby Street Pastors were celebrated for their unwavering commitment to fostering a safer environment on the streets of Rugby during weekend nights.

In Bedworth, Ken Whitehead and Murray Richards received awards for their exceptional efforts in organising and maintaining the Bedworth Armistice event, recognised as the largest Armistice Service outside London.

Sophie said: “One of the great privileges of serving as High Sheriff of Warwickshire has been to meet so many who do so much to make our county such a great place to live.

“Tonight, we recognised and thanked 47 individuals who come from all over the county and who dedicate their time and skills to help others in their communities.”

Tim Cox, Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire praised the awardees for their invaluable contributions to the county’s vitality.

“This Awards evening is a celebration of some of those people, justly rewarding them for their tireless efforts to make Warwickshire such a great place to live and work.

“I was fortunate to work with Sophie Hilleary during her time as High Sheriff. She has had a wonderful year and I will be writing to her to thank her for all her hard work during her year of office.”
