COVENTRY youngsters looking to become the next Roald Dahl are being invited to bid to be crowned the city’s Young Writer of the Year.

The competition is open to all city children in years three, four, five and six with prizes available to the winners and runners-up.

This year’s competition will also include an English as an additional language category.

To enter, youngsters need to write up to 500 words starting with the sentence ‘The clock struck midnight, it was the start of a new year and…’

The competition is run by Coventry Building Society with judges including local children’s authors Ann Evans and Aaron Ashmore.

The competition closes on Monday, February 5.

Becky Welch, Senior Community Specialist at Coventry Building Society, said: “We want to help raise aspirations of children and young people in Coventry.

“Writing is an incredibly important skill, and what better way to encourage young people to develop these skills than with the chance to get creative?”
