Coventry calls for peace in Middle East at vigil

Coventry Editorial 22nd Oct, 2023   0

COVENTRY religious leaders and dignitaries called for peace in the Middle East at a multi-faith vigil at Coventry Cathedral on Wednesday (October 18).

The vigil was organised by the cathedral with representatives from different faiths speaking, including prayers from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Baha’i community leaders.

Organisers said the vigil was an ‘important opportunity for Coventry to show its commitment to peace and reconciliation’.

Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana also attended the vigil.

Following the recent violence in the region, Ms Sultana has been calling for ‘international law to be respected and for a ceasefire.’

She said: “This vigil was a powerful demonstration of our city’s best traditions, with our diverse communities – Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, people of all faiths and none – coming together to mourn the Palestinian and Israeli civilians killed in the recent violence.

“Together we called for peace and an end to the death and destruction.

“I know that reflects the sentiments of people across Coventry, who want to see peace and justice in the region, with the rights of all Palestinians and Israelis upheld.”
