Coventry campaigners hit out at 'disruptive' tree fellings

Coventry Editorial 14th Jan, 2024   0

CAMPAIGNERS have hit out at Severn Trent after several mature trees were felled in Allesley Green.

But while the water firm has said the removal of some trees was sadly unavoidable, many residents have claimed the works have been more intrusive and disruptive than they had initially feared.

Severn Trent is providing a connection to the public sewer network in Allesley Green- something it said it is obligated to do.

Coventrians have voiced concerns about the level of disruption and mess the works are causing, claiming there has been mud on adjacent highways, and blocked drains.

The water firm said drains had not incurred blockages due to the works, but the recent heavy rainfall had caused issues in the area.

Woodlands Ward councillors have written to Severn Trent to highlight concerns and have proposed a public meeting with the firm.

They have also asked for assurances the landscape would be restored to its original condition and trees reinstated.

Coun Peter Male said: “We’ve been inundated with calls from residents about the problems at Allesley Green.

“The works have led to blocked drains and mud on the roads which is creating a real hazard.

“I’ve been speaking to officers at the Council about how this can be addressed, but the taxpayer must not foot the bill for this muddy mayhem.”

A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: “When works take place we always try to limit any impact on the local environment.

“We have tried to do this without disturbing the local area as much as possible, but the removal of some trees is sadly unavoidable.

“All the appropriate consultations and notices were carried out and completed with Coventry City Council and replacement saplings will be planted once works are complete.

“We would like to reassure residents and councillors that the conditions of roads in the area are always monitored and cleared of any mud.”
