Coventry charity urges city's elderly not to miss vital credit to help during winter

AGE UK Coventry and Warwickshire has urged older people on low incomes to get in touch to check their Pension Credit entitlement as part of its ‘Spread the Warmth’ campaign.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the extra difficulties the cold weather brings for some older people.

The charity encourages Pension Credit applications, which, according to the latest data, 958,000 people are missing out on.

Those who receive Pension Credit have access to other support benefits including help with the cost of living, warm home discounts and cold weather payments.

Chief Executive, Michael Garrett, said “As we get older, winter can feel much harder and many of our clients dread wintertime.

“There are fewer opportunities to get out and socialise, which can cause a lack of mobility and strength as well as exacerbating loneliness and isolation.

“Rising energy bills and the need for adequate heating and warm food can increase anxiety about costs during this time.

“I urge all older people who are on a low income to check their eligibility for Pension Credit and our charity can help with your application.”
