SIGNIFICANT changes to traffic arrangements in Coventry city centre will come into effect next week.
The new restrictions aim to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment and address concerns raised by residents and businesses over the past year.
The changes – part of an Experimental Traffic Order (ETRO) – will prohibit access to High Street from Earl Street by making it ‘No Entry’. Vehicular access to High Street via Greyfriars Lane will be restricted between 10 am and 6 pm, Monday to Saturday.
During these times, only buses, cycles, taxis, private hire vehicles, and designated access-only permit holders will be allowed entry.
Other modifications include widening the road at the junction of Little Park Street and Salt Lane to improve access for large vehicles and installing bollards on Bayley Lane to prevent through access.
The new pedestrian and cycle zone, which includes streets by Broadgate and the cathedral, will be in force from June 3.
The zone covers Cuckoo Lane, Greyfriars Lane, Hay Lane, High Street, Pepper Lane, Priory Row, St Michaels Avenue, Trinity Churchyard, and part of Bayley Lane.
A Coventry City Council spokesperson said: “Over the last year we have engaged with and listened to residents and businesses on their concerns and queries about proposals to make changes to traffic arrangements in the area and are now about the start work to make to make parts of the city centre more pedestrian friendly.
“Under the Experimental Traffic Order (ETRO) resident and businesses have a six-month period to provide us with feedback or comments before any changes are made permanent.”
These measures are part of a broader council plan to manage traffic in the city centre, which includes a new bus gate introduced last year and a recently approved red route and cycle lane.
