Coventry council chiefs hoping for government 'go-green' grant

COVENTRY CITY Council is hoping to secure a government grant to help reduce carbon emissions and transition to greener technologies in its public buildings.

The council aims to secure financial support through the government-run Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) for several public buildings, including Moat House Leisure Centre, Foleshill Library, Foleshill Family Hub, Coundon Family Centre, and Wilfred Spencer Centre.

Due to be approved at the council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday the grant funding bid could unlock up to £786k to facilitate the adoption of new, eco-friendly technologies and strategies.

Coun Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs, regeneration, and climate change, said: “Along with many other public buildings, our Central Library uses state of the art green technologies.

“It makes a big difference, and we want to replace end-of-life fossil fuel heating systems like gas boilers in more of our buildings.

“As a city we are taking a leading role in the green revolution, that’s because we recognise it’s so vital to the ongoing regeneration of the city.”

Previous grant funding schemes have enabled the council to achieve significant reductions in emissions, totalling over 1,000 tonnes of carbon per year.

Councils applying for PSDS funding are required to invest in the scheme as part of a match funding criteria.

While electric-based heating initially costs more, the project is set to save up to £117k on energy bills each year.

It aims to cut down on carbon emissions by up to 174tonnes annually and achieve estimated net savings of £40k per year after covering financing costs.

The investment would not only supports carbon reduction targets but also unlocks access to further grant funds and ensures financial sustainability in the long-term.

If approved, the project is slated to commence from April 2024 until March 2025.
