COVENTRY legend Eileen Sheridan, who rewrote all 21 British women’s road records, has been revealed as one of the top 100 most exceptional women in cycling.
Sheridan, nicknamed ‘The Mighty Atom’, was listed in the annual 100 Women in Cycling list by charity Cycling UK.
Her most notable success came in 1954 when she completed the Land’s End to John O’Groats route in two days, 11 hours and seven minutes.
Sheridan, who passed away in February aged 99, has been recognised for her legacy of encouraging other women to get on their bikes.
She was born in the city in 1923, joining the Coventry Cycling Club after developing a passion for the sport and later becoming club president.
Despite the 2021 census showing there are more women than men in the UK, men are much more likely to cycle regularly than women.
Each year, the UK’s cycling charity recognises women who have had a positive impact by inspiring others to cycle and making the sport more inclusive.
