Coventry man calls for Council to fix 'incorrect' road signs

A CAMPAIGNER claims road signs in Coventry have been wrong for many years and is calling for them to be corrected.

Terry Pearce, a retired driving instructor said the issue traces back to 2008 and he is at the forefront of efforts to address the issue.

He said there has been repeated inaction from Coventry City Council, despite sending numerous complaints and letters.

In 2022, he received conformation that the signage was incorrect and should be removed, but he said little progress has been made.

One of the main issues he highlighted is the clearway sign on Butts Road, where there is no clearway.

He said: “When it comes to road safety, there’s no room for ambiguity or delay.

“These signs aren’t just a nuisance; they pose a real risk to motorists navigating Butts Road.”

Terry said the heart of the issue is the miscommunication and lack of follow-through from local authorities.

Terry started an association for Coventry driving instructors in 1998, trying to work with the council regarding road signs in the area.

“Efficiency and accountability should be non-negotiables, especially when it comes to public safety.

“Someone has been paid a lot of money to design and build the new road layout, and I would expect that the relevant Council Officer should have been told to sort it out immediately and not ignore it until I contacted the press over five months later.”

A spokesperson for Coventry City Council said: “The sign is set to be removed and we thank the resident concerned for drawing it to our attention.

“When concerns around road markings and signage across the city are highlighted, we send officers out to check and, if necessary, take the steps needed to put things right.  In this case, the sign involved is no longer necessary and will be removed as part of our ongoing decluttering and maintenance programme across the city.”
