A COVENTRY man convicted of murdering one student and injuring another in a savage knife attack in the city centre will spend at least 24 years behind bars.

Pengqi Sun was jailed for murder on Monday after committing the brutal act in the early hours of April 6.

Coventry University student Shuo Zou was with friends holding a party for a mutual friend of his and Pengqi Sun.

A disagreement broke out between the two, which escalated when Sun assaulted Shuo Zou, but this was quickly stopped by friends.

Sun returned home to arm himself with two blades of a broken pair of scissors and a knife before launching an attack, inflicting a fatal neck wound to Shuo Zou, who died at the scene.

His friend who came to his aid also suffered serious hand injuries.

Sun, 23, was pointed out by witnesses and swiftly arrested.

He claimed he acted in self-defence, but a jury at Warwick Crown Court found him guilty of the murder of Shuo Zou and wounding with intent, although he was cleared of attempted murder.

Alongside being jailed for a minimum of 24 years for the murder, he was also given an eight-year sentence for wounding with intent, as well as two one-year sentences for possession of a bladed article.

These will run concurrently with his 24-year term.

Det Insp Damian Forrest from the Homicide Unit at West Midlands Police, said: “Shuo Zou died from a stab wound miles from home and his family.

“This is a tragedy that escalated from a minor disagreement and our sympathies remain with Shuo’s family and friends.”
