Coventry midwife nominated for prestigious award for helping bereaved families

A CARING Coventry midwife who has worked tirelessly to help bereaved families cope with the devastation of baby loss has been nominated for a national award.

Bethany Wallace, who has been at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust for 18 months, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Elaine Thorp Award for Bereavement Care.

She will find out whether she has won the prize at a ceremony at London’s Broadway House on Thursday, November 9.

Bereaved family members were asked to nominate a health professional whose care had a big impact on their wellbeing after pregnancy or baby loss.

Bethany said: “I’m not certain who has nominated me but I’m very proud to be shortlisted.

“For someone who has gone through such a tough time to do this is lovely- it’s nice to know I have made a difference to them.




“Sometimes it’s just showing time and understanding and building up a rapport. It’s so important that parents in that situation feel listened to.”

The award is handed out by Sands, a charity looking to save babies’ lives and support families, and named after Elaine Thorp, a midwife who was instrumental in providing bereavement care to parents.


In a 40 year NHS career, Elaine offered families pioneering resources now considered essential elements of care such as memory boxes, cold cots, and being able to oventry midwife who heland spend time with their baby.
