COVENTRY and Warwickshire NHS trust is among the highest in the country for staff assault claims according to new data.

Figures from an investigation by LegalExpeert show that in the last five years, there has been 34 claims and incidents of staff assault within the trust, with 23 claims being settled totalling £181,174.

Patrick Mallon, legal expert said something must be done to tackle abuse towards NHS staff who are just trying to do their jobs.

Physical assaults on NHS staff are defined as ‘The intentional application of force to the person of another without lawful justification, resulting in physical injury or personal discomfort.’

Data obtained via Freedom of Information requests to NHS Resolution (the legal body of the NHS) revealed that Coventry and Warwickshire had the highest number of claims in the West Midlands.

The most recent NHS staff survey showed around 14 per cent of staff have reported that they have experienced one incident of abuse in the past 12 months.

The ambulance sector is the worst affected, with almost 50 per cent of paramedics experiencing physical abuse.
