A COVENTRY Positive Youth Foundation worker has been thanked by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh for his work with vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers.

As the Patron of the DofE charity, The Duke hosted thousands from across the UK, celebrating over 8,000 young people who achieved their Gold DofE Awards.

The event spanned two days, with Syed being among the few to personally speak with The Duke after his speech from the Palace’s West Terrace.

Syed, a DofE Manager at the Positive Youth Foundation, has been helping young refugees and asylum seekers integrate into society.

His efforts, particularly in securing bursaries for essential items like footwear and outdoor clothing, were commended by The Duke, who said: “It’s all about sharing passions and interests. It doesn’t matter where you’re from.”

Syed said: “Meeting HRH The Duke of Edinburgh was an absolutely surreal experience.

“The opportunity to interact with someone of such distinction and hear his words of appreciation for our work at the Positive Youth Foundation was truly humbling.

“His genuine interest and gratitude left me feeling incredibly honoured and motivated to continue our efforts in empowering young people.”

Ruth Marvel, CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, highlighted the programme’s impact, noting that 330,948 young people started their DofE Award last year, showcasing the strong desire among youth for enrichment opportunities.

Syed’s journey in youth work began at 18, evolving from coaching football to supporting young people at a local mosque.

He said that introducing the DofE to the Positive Youth Foundation has been a pivotal part of his work, helping young refugees gain essential skills and new experiences.

“It has provided them with a sense of community, purpose, and facilitated their integration into their new environment.”
