STUDENTS from Coventry teamed up to tackle some cake-inspired maths problems in the hope of being named the city’s mathematician of the year.
Six schools attended the event which was hosted by Coventry Building Society- Alderman’s Green, Courthouse Green, Edgewick, Henley Green, John Gulson and Little Heath.
They were challenged with making an elevated cake stand which needed to support a slice of fruit cake.
The year five students were set a series of cake-themed maths questions.
The team from Edgewick Community Primary School in Foleshill were awarded as winners.
Robin Killick, Year 5 STEM lead teacher at Edgewick Community Primary School, said: “The children were absolutely thrilled to win and enjoyed it immensely.
“They worked really hard and it’s great to see their effort in the classroom pay off at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
“Taking part was great fun, but winning is the icing on the cake.”
Students who took part in the competition said they enjoyed the experience and it helped them understand maths more.
Yahya Mohamed aged 9 added: “I liked the team-building activities and everyone sharing their ideas to solve the maths puzzles. The tour of the stadium was really good too.”
