COVENTRIANS have been thanked for helping at a Coventry school where breaktime has been transformed.
St Patrick’s Primary School, part of the Romero Catholic Academy, has unveiled its Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) area to help youngsters explore, create and make the most of outdoor time.
The new-look play and learning area includes a wooden car made with donated parts, a reading hut, vegetable patch and musical space.
They are now in use at the school on Deedmore Road after parents and staff helped transform the space and a former student’s parents donated a mud kitchen.
The school held a fundraiser event for a sandpit and family members volunteered to help dig and fill it while neighbouring Castle Wood School donated a drum kit.
The welly bank, which is still growing, allows children who do not have suitable footwear to get involved.
Elise Liggins, assistant vice principal at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, said: “We have been blown away by the response from the community and have so many people to thank for helping to pull this together.
“OPAL will help the children find new ways to play together and express themselves.
“It has been designed to be completely flexible and open to their interpretation, so it has been amazing to see how they are making use of it.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of people in our school community, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has been involved.”
