Fitness classes to raise cash to help Coventry charity with record demand

Coventry Editorial 1st Dec, 2023   0

A SERIES of Coventry fitness classes are set to take place this Sunday to show support to survivors of sexual violence and abuse while raising vital funds for a city charity in desperate need of support.

The Alan Higgs Centre will be hosting the classes between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday (December 3) to raise awareness and cash for the Coventry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (CRASAC).

CRASAC is the only specialist service in Coventry providing support for adults and children who have been impacted directly or indirectly by sexual violence or abuse.

While the charity does receive some funding, it is not enough to deal with crippling demand which has left them with a huge waiting list of people in desperate need of support.

Last year, almost 1,500 Coventrians accessed CRASAC’s services, with the demand increasing every year, meaning many survivors can wait up to 14 months to access the help they desperately need.

Those taking part in a fitness class will be asked to donate £5, or whatever they can.

In return, they will be able to enjoy bums, legs and tums, Zumba and self-defence classes.

Nationally, one in four girls and one in six boys will experience childhood sexual abuse, while a third of survivors only tell someone what happened to them later in life.

One in five women over the age of 16 has experienced some form of sexual violence and around 15 per cent of those report to the police.

Becky Williamson, Co-Chair Board of Trustees for CRASAC, said: “CRASAC is such an integral service to the people of Coventry.

“It really is an honour to support this service and as a result support survivors of sexual violence.

Please come and join us on Sunday to raise money and awareness for this wonderful charity.”
