DHL is opening the UK’s first operationally carbon-neutral new build DHL site in Coventry, creating 260 new jobs.
The facility, spanning 900,000 square feet, is full of eco-friendly features aimed at minimising its environmental footprint.
Powered entirely by renewable electricity, the building has been certified as BREEAM ‘Outstanding’, the highest level of accreditation for sustainability in construction.
Among its green credentials is an air source heat pump, providing all heating and cooling needs while saving approximately 135 tonnes of CO2 annually compared to traditional gas-powered systems.
The facility harnesses solar energy through 3000 solar panels, supported by an onsite battery storage system, enabling over 40 per cent of the site’s electricity needs to be met onsite.
Natalie Frow, managing director of E-commerce and Retail at DHL Supply Chain UK and Ireland, emphasised the facility’s role as an industry leader in sustainability
She said: “Our new Coventry operation sets the standard for the industry.
“The highly considered design and fit-out is centered on our three priorities: our people, our customers, and our environment.”
The facility has been designed to prioritise employee well-being and a live kitchen serves freshly cooked, healthy meals.
Andy Street, mayor of the West Midlands, praised the facility’s eco-friendly schemes and highlighted its role in driving regional sustainability goals.
He said: “DHL Supply Chain’s new facility at Coventry Cross Point is certainly impressive, especially in terms of its eco credentials.
“That’s important because the private sector’s role will be mission critical in helping us achieve our ambitions to be a net zero region by 2041.”
