New electric charging points coming to Coventry

COVENTRY is revving up its commitment to sustainability towards electric vehicles (EVs), securing over £12million in funding to install more than 2,100 on-street electric vehicle charging spaces.

This scheme is a key step in the city’s ambitious green vision to become a clean air hub, making EV ownership more accessible for residents without private parking.

With approximately 46 per cent of Coventry households lacking access to private parking, the need for on-street charging infrastructure is paramount in facilitating the transition to electric vehicles for many in the community.

The additional funding, secured in March, will see 76 new charging points installed across several neighborhoods including Radford, Upper Stoke, St Michael’s, Bablake, Longford, Sherbourne, and Foleshill by March 2025, providing an additional 144 on-street charging spaces.

This will bring the total number of charging spaces in Coventry to 2,307 by the designated deadline.

Coun Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs, regeneration, and climate change said: “We are delighted to have secured yet more funding to improve charging infrastructure in areas where people don’t have a driveway as we know this is a real barrier to electric car ownership. Although we already have one of the best charging point networks in the UK, we know more are needed.”

To ensure efficient use of the charging spaces, each spot will be equipped with bay markings and sensors, allowing authorities to monitor usage and adapt infrastructure as needed to accommodate the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Coventry is already a leader in EV infrastructure, boasting more charging points than any city outside London.

The new charging points will be powered by nearby lamp posts or independent power supplies, ensuring accessibility and sustainability.
