WARWICKSHIRE County Council has partnered with Podback to launch coffee pod recycling at Judkins Recycling Centre in Nuneaton.

The pods should be emptied loose into the designated Podback containers for aluminium or plastic pods, ensuring no bags or other packaging are included.

Residents must book a slot prior to their visit to the Recycling Centre – all pods collected through Podback are recycled within the UK.

The containers are clearly marked, and the separation of plastic and aluminium pods is essential as they are processed at different recycling facilities.

The process involves shredding the pods to remove the coffee grounds, with the plastic and aluminium materials repurposed into new products such as packaging, car components, and building materials.

The coffee grounds are treated by anaerobic digestion to produce renewable energy (biogas) and soil improvers.

Podback, a not-for-profit organisation, was created and funded by the UK’s leading coffee pod systems including NESCAFE Dolce Gusto, Tassimo, and Nespresso, in collaboration with over 25 coffee pod brands and national retailers.

Coun Heather Timms, Warwickshire County Council portfolio holder for environment, climate, and culture, said: “We are really excited to be working with Podback to introduce another recycling stream at the Judkins Recycling Centre for residents.

“Coffee drinkers can now enjoy their coffee knowing their pods can be recycled and go on to be made into new products, renewable energy, and improve the soil.

“At Warwickshire County Council, we are always looking for innovation in responding to the climate emergency.

“Every innovation helps, and it also allows residents the opportunity to take a more active role in tackling the climate emergency.”
