Plans for new Coventry rail station in Binley and Willenhall take step closer

COVENTRY will get a share of £1million earmarked by transport bosses to develop proposals for a new railway station in the city.

The cash will look to explore the possibility of building a new station in Coventry East, which would cover Binley and Willenhall.

Coventry East would be on the line linking the city with Rugby.

Castle Bromwich has also been mooted to get a new station by West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE), as has an area near Tettenhall.

The three locations have been shortlisted by the WMRE following a feasibility study.

The study concluded a new station could provide much-needed improvement to public transport for Binley and Willenhall.

Each of the potential new stations are in areas with a lack of rapid public transport links.

The area was selected due to its high levels of deprivation.

The station name will be decided alongside the local community.

The cash was awarded to the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) by the Department for Transport.

Further proposed stations which have not made the shortlist, including one in Foleshill, could be reconsidered once the Midlands Rail Hub is under construction.

The WMCA added it remains ‘confident’ a new station at Coundon Road could still happen.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: “With five new railway stations under construction and a sixth on the way, we’re getting on with delivering the transport infrastructure local people want to see right across our region.

“We’ve now whittled down our list of stations to a priority list of these three as these are the ones most likely to deliver the biggest benefit to the communities they serve.

“For those locations which did not make the shortlist, we’re still looking at ways to bring forward delivery.

“New rail infrastructure can be transformative for an area – offering residents sustainable and convenient access to rapid and reliable public transport.

“That’s why it’s good news that local people will benefit from these stations very soon.”
