COVENTRY is at the heart of a national campaign to encourage greener communities, which is led by Poet Laureate John Bernard.

The movement includes ‘Spark a Light,’ a creative piece crafted by John in honour of Coventry’s commitment to sustainability.

A recent survey conducted by E.ON, polling over 10,000 individuals across the UK, underscores a demand for accelerated sustainable practices.

The data reveals a shift in public sentiment, with 34 per cent of Coventry respondents said they would consider moving away if the city does not embrace greener practices, compared to a national average of 23 per cent.

E.ON’s has collaborated with Coventry City Council for a 15 years aiming to create a more self-sufficient city – with potential plans including solar energy in public buildings and enhanced energy efficiency measures in homes and workplaces.

The survey also sheds light on Coventry’s top priorities for green investment, including home sustainability enhancements, carbon reduction in public infrastructure, and the promotion of eco-friendly transportation options.

Additionally, businesses in Coventry are urged to adopt greener practices, with emphasis on office sustainability and enhanced recycling schemes.

Chris Norbury, chief executive of E.ON, said: “This survey builds on our 2022 research and shows attitudes and ambitions towards more sustainable communities are growing year on year, and it’s on all of us across business, public life and within our own lives to respond to that clamour for change.”

John crafted a poem based on the responses from people across the city to bring to life their hopes and worries and said he wanted his poem to act as a call to action for all.

“I’ve always been extremely proud to call Coventry my home and Spark a Light is a celebration of our city’s energy, sense of community and hope for a greener future.

“We all know that we need to do more to be greener, but people can often feel powerless to drive the change they want to see in their wider communities.

“My message to people across the UK is to raise your voices and speak your minds.

You have the power to make local governments and businesses invest in a greener community. It’s happening in Coventry and together we can drive action all over the UK.”
