Rail upgrades complete after week of disruption for Coventrians

Coventry Editorial 8th Aug, 2023   0

WORK to improve railway journeys between Coventry and Banbury is now complete after over a week of disruption.

The railway reopened on Monday after nine days of work on the Coventry and Leamington Spa line and between Heyford and Oxford.

Different sections of the railway closed between July 29 and August 6, disrupting the service between the Coventry and Leamington Spa stations.

Upgrades included an £11million investment by Network Rail to strengthen a Victorian-built railway viaduct which carries trains over the River Avon.

Damaged and missing bricks were replaced on the 179-year-old structure while the mortar was repointed and its nine arches were strengthened.

Other works impacting Coventrians journeys included installing a 47-metre-long bridge in Kenilworth so HS2 tracks could be built underneath the existing rail route.
