A REPEAT offender has been jailed for shoplifting in Nuneaton.
Daniel Reader, 37, of no fixed address, has been handed a four-week prison sentence and a £154 fine after being charged with two counts of theft from shops.
The first incident took place on Friday, February 23, at a shop on Bond Street in Nuneaton.
Reader was observed entering the store and proceeding to the alcohol section, where he attempted to conceal boxes of chocolate in his bag, totalling £50 in value.
Despite being interrupted by staff members, Reader left the store without making payment.
On Friday, March 1, Reader entered a store in the Abbeygate Shopping Centre of Nuneaton and proceeded to fill his bag with various items, including medications, washing pods, and washing powder, amounting to an estimated £100.
Both incidents were reported to Warwickshire Police leading to Reader’s identification through CCTV footage and staff recognition.
PC Tom Shorthouse, town centre officer from the Nuneaton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “We always take swift action when businesses in our community report a crime, and we’re dedicated to keeping shops and their staff safe.
“Shoplifters like Reader are often quickly recognised by staff members due to repeat offending, and it is only repeat or serious offenders who receive prison sentences for shoplifting.
“Reader will have four weeks to consider the options available to him for future, and to take the opportunities for help offered to him.”
He was sentences at Coventry Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
