Stunning sculptures to be built at Coventry's historic cemetery

Coventry Editorial 31st Oct, 2023   0

COVENTRY’S Paxton Arboretum at the London Road Cemetery will be hosting a sculpture trail this November inspired by the venue’s historic landscape.

The Arboretum will be welcoming visitors between Wednesday, November 8 and Saturday, November 11 as its hills, shrubs and trees are used as an inspiration for sculptures by four acclaimed artists.

The artists will be crafting sculptures around separate themes in response to the arboretum’s landscape.

These include the simple gift of the natural world, reconciliation, the relationship between well-being and nature, and the use of sustainable and natural craft as a tool for repurposing the unloved and forgotten.

Visitors will be able to watch and support the artists as they work with the cemetery’s natural materials.

Then on Saturday, November 11, the artists will be hosting a guided walking tour of their artworks discussing their sculptures, creative process, and personal journeys.

The sculptures will remain at the arboretum throughout Remembrance weekend.

Visitors can also enjoy guided tours between 10am and 3pm, where they can learn more about those buried in the cemetery who fought in the First and Second World Wars.

The land sculptures are being crafted as part of the Coventry Peace Festival, which promotes the city’s history as a place of reconciliation.

London Road Cemetery was created in 1845 and designed by architect Joseph Paxton, and following a restoration project led by Historic Coventry Trust, it was opened to visitors as a green space.
