Taser used to stop dangerous dog fight in Coventry street

AN APPEAL has been launched to find people involved in a vicious dog fight which took place in Coventry on Tuesday.

Police were called to the incident in Milverton Road where it was reported a group of dogs were fighting in the street, posing a threat to the public.

When officers arrived, one of the dogs was clearly out of control, attacking other dogs and presenting a risk to members of the public nearby, including a number of children who were in the area.

Because of this risk and because the dog was out of control, officers used a Taser to prevent it causing serious harm.

West Midlands Police said it was ‘a dynamic incident which needed containing as quickly as possible to eliminate the danger to the public’.

The dog, was placed in a large wheelie bin which was close to hand to prevent danger to officers and those in the area.

They were then able to bring the situation quickly under control.

Contrary to reports on social media, the dog was not hit by a police car and was not killed. The dog was contained by officers until the specialist dog unit arrived with a van which the dog could be moved to.

The dog was seized by the Dangerous Dogs Unit and has since been assessed by a vet and secured in kennels.

The dog is fit and well and is being looked after by kennels staff.

The owner is fully aware of the actions police have taken so far.

A spokesperson added: “We are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to come forward so that we can piece together what happened.

“We continue to investigate the circumstances around the incident and are keen to speak to a dog owner whose dog we believe was also involved in the incident.

“It’s really important that people come forward so we can establish what happened.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101.

The incident was captured on officers body worn video and will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

A man was also arrested on suspicion of obstructing police and was interviewed on Wednesday.
