A COVENTRY school held host to tow inspirational speakers to inspire students.

Chris Lubbe, Nelson Mandela’s, Mandela’s bodyguard and Floyd Steadman OBE, the first black captain of a Premiership rugby club, united to inspire hundreds of educators and staff members at a Coventry school.

The event, part of the all-staff day organised by the Romero Catholic Multi-Academy Company (MAC), saw Chris and Floyd sharing their extraordinary life journeys with Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School.

Chris, hailing from South Africa, recounted his transition from a young protester amidst the racial turmoil of his homeland to serving Mandela for nine years during the 1990s.

Floyd, reflected on his own journey from a childhood in care to challenging racial stereotypes in the rugby world of the 1970s and 80s.

The Romero Catholic MAC all-staff day also marked the launch of the company’s People Strategy, aimed at prioritising staff wellbeing, training, and enrichment across its eight schools.

Helen Quinn, CEO of the Romero Catholic MAC, said: “It was incredible to hear from two hugely inspiring individuals on the challenges they have faced in their lives and how they responded to make the world a better place.

“There were so many lessons for us, not just as educators but as people, to take away from their talks on a day that was centred around the theme of belonging.”
