WARWICKSHIRE has been selected as one of the seven new areas to lead the implementation of the Families First for Children Pathfinder programme.

The scheme aims to enhance support for families, meaning children can remain in safe environments and provide protection to vulnerable people.

Under the programme, targeted early help will be provided to families facing challenges such as domestic abuse, addiction, or mental health issues, with the goal of addressing issues before they endanger the well-being of children.

Social workers will lead child protection efforts, with a focus on involving the wider family in decision-making processes.

The programme – supported by to £19.5million in funding – forms a crucial part of the government’s broader strategy to reform children’s social care – known as ‘Stable Homes, Built on Love’.

In addition to Warwickshire, other areas selected for the Families First programme include Luton, Redbridge, Walsall, Warrington, Lewisham, and The Wirral.

Practical and financial assistance will be offered to family members to ensure they can support children living with their parents effectively.

Children, families, and wellbeing minister, David Johnston, said: “Every child deserves a safe and loving environment, where they are protected and can thrive.

“The progress we are making with our children’s social care reforms with the support of Warwickshire will make sure all families can access the right support before issues escalate, helping keep more children in safe and loving homes.”

The Families First programme will revolutionise how Warwickshire supports families and children by establishing multi-disciplinary family help teams, increasing the involvement of extended family members, and creating dedicated multi-agency child protection teams.

The reforms outlined in the ‘Stable Homes, Built on Love’ strategy were developed in response to recommendations made in independent reviews of children’s social care, which highlighted systemic challenges in meeting the needs of children and families across England.
