Woman braves charity cycle ride for brain tumour surviving Coventry mum

Coventry Editorial 15th Dec, 2023   0

A CYCLIST has ridden almost 400km for charity in support of her mum who is brain tumour survivor.

Emma Samuel from Balsall Common, rode from Vietnam to Cambodia in six days, cycling for up to seven hours each day.

The engineer who works at Jaguar Land Rover has raised almost £1,000 for the charity, Brain Tumour Research after her mum, Kathy Jackson, was diagnosed with the disease 13 years ago.

The-mother-of-two said: “I’ve always enjoyed cycling, but only ever did it for fun, perhaps a couple of times a week.

“It certainly was different to cycling in southeast Asia compared to the UK, the weather was hot and humid but the scenery was beautiful.”

Kathy who is 71 and lives in Coventry was diagnosed with a low-grade meningioma in 2010 after having ‘funny turns’.

She had surgery the same year, followed by radiotherapy in 2011 and required no further treatment.

Emma added: “As I’ve got older and had conversations with different people, I realised how many people are living with their own diagnosis, or know someone who has a brain tumour. To be part of raising money and awareness so we can find kinder treatments has been a humbling experience.”

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1 per cent of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours since records began in 2002.

Mel Tiley, community development manager at Brain Tumour Research, said: “We’re grateful to Emma for sharing her mum’s story and wish her well for any future scans.

“One in three people know someone affected by a brain tumour, the stats around the disease are disturbing. It’s with the support of people such as Emma that will help us fund research to finder kinder treatments and ultimately a cure for brain tumours.”
