Work starts on blossom garden at Coventry's Charterhouse

Coventry Editorial 5th Sep, 2023   0

WORK has started to create a community-led blossom garden and natural play space at Charterhouse Heritage Park.

The National Trust and Historic Coventry Trust are developing the space for the Blossom Together in Coventry project, which has been funded through the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The project aims to create a place where the Coventrians can connect with nature and enjoy blossoming trees along with a small natural play space for families and children.

Two mounds have been created to form a grassy amphitheatre in the play space, and the area will be cordoned off until later this month to allow the grass to grow.

Wildflowers will also be planted to attract bees and other wildlife to the area.

In the October half term, 20 blossom trees will be planted by Coventrians including youngsters from local schools and the space will officially open in the spring.

The blossom garden and natural play space are being created next to Charterhouse.

The grade I listed 14th century Carthusian monastery is run by Historic Coventry Trust and opened to the public earlier this year after years of renovation.

Test pits were dug during the Festival of Archaeology to search for the lost Chapel of St Anne, and to check the ground for historical remains before the landscaping works began.

Historic Coventry Trust education and engagement manager Sarah Allen said: “By working with the National Trust to create a space that encourages children to play and explore, we hope more families and children will find a deeper connection with nature whilst visiting Charterhouse Heritage Park.

“The blossom garden will become a well-used and much-loved space for people living and working in the area.”
