Work to re-naturalise Coventry's River Sherbourne to start later this month

THE FIRST steps to re-naturalise the River Sherbourne as part of a major £3million project are set to take place later this month.

Weir Mitigation works will be carried out at Lake View Park from July 31 as part of the Sherbourne Valley Project.

These works will aim to have a positive short and long-term effect on the nine-mile-long river.

The bridge above the weir will be closed while the work is being carried out.

A weir is a small barrier built across a stream or river to raise the water level slightly on the upstream side.

The Sherbourne Valley project will restore and revitalise the river, which runs through the heart of Coventry, enabling people to enjoy and celebrate all aspects of the river’s heritage.

The project will aim to reawaken the river, create new wetlands and change people’s relationships with it.

It has six key objectives, including better connecting Coventrians to the river and its surrounding green spaces, ensuring the area has habitats for wildlife and making it more accessible along its length.

The built heritage will also be preserved and celebrated and funding will help empower the local community to take ownership of the river.

Action around re-naturalising the river was approved by community consultation surveys carried out by the project last April.
