TWO city hospital consultants will be taking to the city’s streets on Sunday, June 11 to brave a 100km challenge to promote the British Transplant Games, which will be coming to Coventry this summer.
The event will start at Oxfords Churchill Hospital and will see people either cycle or run through to Coventry’s University Hospital.
It has been organised by consultant transplant surgeon James Hunter and consultant nephrologist Simon Fletcher, who both work at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust and will be taking part on the day.
The British Transplant Games will take place in Coventry between July 27 and 30 with more than 2,500 athletes competing in 26 sports.
Those who are unable to complete the entire route can take part in a 10km leg.
Runners will start at 9am with cyclists beginning later.
The Games, now in its 45th year, aim to raise awareness of the life-saving benefits of organ donation while encouraging organ recipients to stay active afterwards.
A new COxNet scheme has recently been developed allowing kidney transplant patients in Coventry and Oxford to travel between the two cities for surgeries.
This allows Coventry patients to benefit from Oxford’s shorter waiting times – COxNET has already resulted in over 150 extra kidney transplant operations.
Simon said his event will promote the Games and the transplant relationship between UHCW and Oxford.
“It will be challenging but we hope it will be an enjoyable day.
“We have athletes who are taking part in the Games who will be joining us and are an inspiration, but everyone is welcome to take part.”
