WEST Orchards Shopping Centre fell silent as 4,000 poppies descended from its dome at the end of a moving service to mark Armistice Day.

After a brief introduction, Coventry Lord Mayor Coun Kevin Maton gave a short address, during which he stressed the importance of remembering those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the address, children from St Mary and St Benedict’s school read out poems of remembrance they had written themselves.

Remembrance prayers were then read by Holy Trinity Church Vicar Rev Richard Hibbert, and at 11am the Last Post was played by the Coventry Corp of Drums followed by two minutes of silence.

In an incredibly moving moment, 4,000 poppies then fell from the West Orchards dome, and the service ended with the Kohima Epitaph.

Holy Trinity Coventry Vicar, Rev Richard Hibbert said: “It was lovely to see the number of people who stopped on every level of the shopping centre to pay their respects to those who served and truly deserve to be remembered.

“I’m mindful that remembrance is more important than most years given current circumstances, the media have raised our awareness of the tragedy of war across the globe and with it has increased the chance for us to remember.”
