COVENTRY poets can put themselves in the running for one of five commissions to perform a seven-minute set at Positive Images Festivals’ ‘Thrive’ community event.

A diverse range of writers, particularly those from underrepresented communities, are being sought for the event on on March 18 at the Indian Community Centre in Foleshill.

This year’s poetry hopefuls must perform pieces around the theme of ‘green spaces’ and demonstrate a connection with nature within an urban landscape.

Applicants should submit up to three examples of their poetry, a 200-word explanation of previous experience and reasons why they want to take part.

Selected artists will be paid £50 for their performance and have the chance to attend two online group mentoring sessions with Coventry Poet Laureate, Emilie Lauren Jones.

The closing date for applications is midnight on January 23.

Those successful will hear in the following days.

Emilie said the commission was ideal for anyone who loved writing poetry and wanted to increase their confidence in performing in public.

The Positive Images Festival, launched in 1995 as a one-day multi-cultural book and food fayre, has grown into a bigger event celebrating Coventry music, dance, drama, literature, poetry, workshops and storytelling.

This year’s festival runs from June 17 to July 8.
