The powers are in place in the city centre, Hillfields and Far Gosford Street tonight and into tomorrow morning until 7am.

The area is shown on the map below.

The increased powers enable officers to stop and search people they suspect may be involved in violence involving weapons.

The force said it had taken this step in response to recent incidents of violence, some involving weapons, over the last few days and to keep people safe.

West Midlands Police Deputy Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine said: “We will use every power we have to stop violence.

“But we need your help.”

She urged people who knew those responsible to report them by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“You may be entitled to a reward & you don’t have to give your name.”

People can also report knife crime or violence via Live Chat at west-midlands.police.uk or by calling 101.
