AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a ‘matted and dirty’ rabbit was found abandoned in Coventry with his legs tied together, resulting in him having to be put to sleep.
The RSPCA animal rescue officer Beccie Doherty was called after the rabbit was found between 4.30pm to 5pm on June 9 on a footpath between Gerald Avenue and Charter Primary School in Canley Fields.
The rabbit had both of the back legs tied very tightly with string and he was taken to Broad Lane Vets, where it was decided the only option was to ‘end his suffering’ and put him to sleep.
The string was so tight it had begun to cut through muscle layers and the area around the genitals had turned necrotic.
The rabbit was also covered in faeces.
The RSPCA is now investigating what happened to the rabbit and who is responsible for abandoning him.
Beccie Doherty said: “It’s heartbreaking to think someone could treat any animal in such a cruel and thoughtless way, and then simply leave him to suffer, unable to move and covered in his own faeces, in this way.
“I’d like to hear from anyone with information about who owned this rabbit or where he’s come from.”
Anyone with information should contact the RSPCA’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
