A RAPIST from Coventry who sexually abused a girl in the city more than 40 years ago has been jailed.
John Conway, 79, was sentenced following an investigation into abuse against a girl in the 1970s and 1980s.
Conway repeatedly sexually abused and raped the girl, who was known to him, on several occasions between 1978 and 1985.
He has been jailed after the girl, now an adult, came forward and told officers her story.
When Conway was interviewed by police in 2020, he denied the offences, which happened in the The Boxhill and Moorfield areas of Stoke Aldermoor.
Despite this, Conway – who had previous convictions stretching back to the 1970s for burglary, theft and handling stolen goods – was charged with rape and indecent assault in 2021.
Following a trial at Warwick Crown Court, Conway was sentenced to 17 years in prison. He will also be on the sex offenders register for life.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We have dedicated teams of officers whose job it is to investigate rape and serious sexual assault. “No matter how long ago the offences took place, our officers will always investigate any reports they receive.”
