Coventry researchers develop miscarriage care tool

UNIVERSITY of Warwick researchers have developed a new tool designed to help with miscarriage care for pregnant women using data from Coventry people.

The online tool helps women who have had a miscarriage in the past better understand their chances of having a successful pregnancy, as well as giving advice on tests, treatment and lifestyle changes.

The tool has been developed by maths and healthcare experts at the University alongside Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research, and they analysed medical data to develop a predictive algorithm model.

It asks for data including age, BMI, number of previous miscarriages and previous live births.

People can access it on a website through a phone, tablet or desktop.

This data will accurately determine the chances of the next pregnancy being successful and will also play a part in developing an understanding of the factors increasing the risk of miscarriage.

University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire consultant Professor Siobhan Quenby said the new tool will help give ‘reassurance to pregnant women across the UK at what is often a hugely difficult point in their lives’.

University maths Prof Nigel Burroughs added: “This tool are great examples of the things that can be achieved when we work together and an excellent example of how applied maths can impact real-world issues”.
